One of the other most important events that took place in the tenth of Hijri after the event of Ghadir was the Eid of Mubahela. This event took place in an area near the boundaries of Yemen called Najran. The people of Najran believed in the Christian religion. The Holy Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.a.) invited them toward Islam. Two of the elders of Najran called Sayyed and Ghageb came in the presence of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and inquired from him about the Holy Quran and Hazrat Easa (a.s.) [Prophet Jesus Christ]. The Holy Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.a.) replied, “I invite the people to say that there is no God but Allah and I am the Messenger and Prophet of Allah. Easa, Son of Maryam was also a servant and creature of Allah. He would eat and drink and would speak". The Christian priests said, “If he was the servant and creature of Allah, then who was his father?" The Holy Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.a.) replied," what have you said about Hazrat Adam, the father of human beings? Wasn't he God's creature and creature who would, like other creatures and servants, eat, drink, and speak? They said, " Yes, Hazrat Adam was as you have said". Then the holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied, “Ok, then who was Adam's father. Isn't Adam more worthy tor this position as he neither had a father nor a mother?" The Christian priests were dumbfounded and bewildered and began to stare at each other. At that very moment, this verse from the Holy Quran was revealed: "Surely, the likeness of Easa is with Allah as the likeness of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him, be, and he was. (this is ) the truth from your Lord, so be not of the disputers". The Christian priests were helpless in setting forth any argument before the Quranic logic. They were trying to evade the discussion. At this time, the verse of Mubahila was revealed for the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.). The Almighty Allah instructed the Holy Prophet (S.A) that "but, whoever disputes with you in this matter after what has come to you of knowledge, then say: Come, let us call our sons and your sons and our women and your women and our near people and your near people, then let us be earnest in prayer, and pray for the curse of Allah on the liars". The above verses were addressed to the Christian deputation from Najran. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) argued with them proving that Hazrat Eisa was son of Maryam and not the son of God and that he was only a human being and a Prophet. Having argued the point fully and convincingly Having argued the point fully and convincingly and finding them still deliberately persisting on their false belief in the deity of Hazrat Easa (a.s.), the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) challenged them to invoke the curse of Allah. On the 24th of Zilhajj 10 A.H., a huge conglomeration of people gathered outside Medina. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) entered the field with his most beloved ones. He entered with his grandsons, Leading Imam Hasan (a.s.) by the hand and carrying Imam Hussain (a.s.) in his arm, in place of sons; his beloved daughter Hazrat Fatima (a.s.) followed him in place of women, representing daughter, mother and wife, and Hazrat Ali (a.s.) walking behind Fatima (a.s.) with the banner. The Holy Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.a.) was repeatedly reciting the verse of Tathir, " Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanliness from you. O peoples of the House and to purify you a (thorough) purifying". Then, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) prayed: " 0 Allah! This Ali is my Nafs (spirit and soul). He is like my own self before me." " O Allah! This Fatima is my daughter. She is the best of the women of" the Universe. " O Allah! These are Hassan and Hussain, my t wo children and grandsons. They are the Sayyed (leaders) of the youth of the Paradise. I am at war with anyone who is at war with them and I am in peace with anyone who is in peace with them.”
The Christians watched these holy and enlightened beloved ones of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.). They were astonished and lost hope. They were convinced that Mohammad (s.a.w.a.) was the true Prophet of Allah. He had not hesitated to bring with himself his most dearests and nearest ones. One of the Christians said: Now, what should we do? He has come to the field with his most beloved and nearest ones. This is the proof of his truthfulness and reality. No person will put the life of his dearest ones in danger but that he is having esteem and worth before God. Do you not know that no tribe or people engaged in Mubahela with any of the Prophet but that he lost his children and elders? If they (the Holy Prophet and his family) ask the Almighty God to break a mountain, the mountain would break down into pieces. If they curse us, all of us will perish. Then, no Christian will remain on this earth till the day of resurrection.
Thus, the Christians decided to approach the Holy Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.a.) and inform him that they were unwilling to engage in Mubahela but at the same time were not prepared to give up their religion. However, they were willing to come to a settlement. The Christians were generously treated and in return for the payment of Jaziya, they were allowed to follow their religion as long as they did so without any mischief. This is amongst the salient characteristics and divine honour that Ali (A.S) was referred to as the self (life) of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.). He was the most nearest one to the Messenger of Allah. During the day of Shaura, Hazrat Ali (a.s.) also referred to this event and the verse of Muba hela to show his truthfulness and the right to lead the Islamic nation. All those present confirmed his rightful claim.
